Sunning, Swimming and Your Hair

Summer means sun and swimming. And while we love the outdoors, it can really do some damage to your hair. Here are some tips for protecting it while enjoying the beach or pool.

If you’re going swimming, whether it’s in the ocean or a chlorinated pool, make sure to wet hair with fresh water prior to swimming. Water fills up the hair cuticle making it more difficult for chlorine and salt to be absorbed. Be sure to rinse well with fresh water after taking a dip too.
If you’re on vacation or can go a few days without shampooing use conditioner only. Wet hair, slather on a deep conditioner prior to sun or swim and rinse well later. The longer you go without shampooing your hair the better. The reason is that shampoos can strip and dry hair due to the detergents (sulfates) in them. You’ve probably heard about sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners by now, and we’ll discuss that in a later blog, but a short explanation is that sulfates are detergents that can dry your and strip your haircolor. Blush carries several lines of organic sulfate-free products so finding one perfect for your hair is easy.

To retain hair color using UV filter products is helpful. One we especially love is Redken’s Sparkling Sun Shield. It protects haircolor from UV rays - think of it as sunblock for your hair. It smooths the hair and adds a little sparkle while protecting it from sun, salt and chlorine.
Also at the top of our list is a clarifying shampoo like All Nutrient’s Clarphyx, which is available at Blush. It is terrific for getting mineral deposits like chlorine and salt out. What you need to know about keratin straightening treatments.

Keratin Conditioning Treatments are hotter than the Florida heat. Nearly every salon offers them, but what exactly are they?

Keratin Treatments are used to reduce frizz, cut down on blow-dry time, and make your hair more resistant to humidity. Keratin is a natural protein found in hair, skin and nails. The treatment works by adding more keratin protein to your hair.

They are NOT straighteners, but you might describe it as "botox for your hair." If you hair is curly you will still be able to wear curls - they will just be softer, looser and frizz-free. If your hair is coarse, wavy or frizzy, the keratin works to make it smoother. We like to say it makes your hair "skinnier" which is why it will be easier to blow out or wear straight.

BEWARE!!! Not all Keratin Treatments are equal. Some contain formaldehyde, which is toxic and is actually used to embalm bodies. We don't know the long-term effects of exposure, but we are certainly not comfortable using it. We've heard of people getting the treatments in garages or stylists using face masks. This makes us wonder, is it safe???

At Blush we use a formaldehyde-free formula that we have found delivers the very best results. The formula is applied to the hair similar to the way hair color is applied. Your hair is then blown out straight, and then flat ironed. It is absolutely necessary that you NOT wash your hair or get it wet, pull it back, or clip it in any way for three days.
